Braemar Gathering

Braemar Gathering, which takes place every year on the first Saturday of September, is the most famous Highland Games event hosted in Scotland. This year’s event has been cancelled, but we can still feel an intense sense of togetherness by sharing our passion for Scottish Heritage.

With a rich history of over 900 years, the gathering takes place at a short distance from the Royal summer residence Balmoral. In 1848, when Queen Victoria first attended the event, the Royal patronage of the gathering began. During the last centuries, it became a tradition for the Monarch and Royal Family to be present at the event.

Originally, the event was hosted in autumn, when the deer were fat, so hunting played a major role. With time, the gathering has evolved and currently there are as many as 66 different events which include dancing, piping, tossing the caber, tug-of-war, a hill race and a children’s sack race.

Today, the Braemar Gathering remains a symbol of Scottish identity and cultural pride. The competitive element is definitely still a major attraction, but when combined with the spectacle of Highland dancers and pipers and the beauty of the Scottish scenery, it becomes an even more memorable event.
