How to Wash and Iron Your Kilt: Keep It Looking Sharp

Posted by Tartanista on 26th Sep 2024

With the right care, a traditional Scottish kilt can last for years. Knowing how to properly wash and iron your tartan kilt is essential to maintain its quality and appearance.

Here’s a simple guide to help you keep your tartan looking its best.

Washing Your Kilt

Our Kilts are made from hard wearing acrylic or heavy drill cotton for the Utility kilts, so they are quite easy to wash.

Machine Wash for UtilityValue and Deluxe Kilts: All our Kilts including the Utility Kilts can be machine washed at 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). However, be sure not to spin dry them to avoid damaging the fabric.

Hang to Dry: After washing, hang your kilt with top clips to maintain the pleats. Make sure the kilt is properly supported so it dries evenly.

Ironing Your Kilt

Start ironing while your kilt is slightly damp or sprinkle a bit of water over it, if it is dry. To keep your kilt looking crisp and free of wrinkles, proper ironing is key.

Low Heat Setting: Always use a low to medium heat setting.

Press the Pleats: Lay your kilt flat on an ironing board, pleats facing up. Place a thin cotton cloth (like a tea towel) between the iron and the kilt to protect the fabric. Gently press the pleats, making sure each fold is sharp and aligned. Do not drag the iron across the fabric—use firm, pressing motions.

Storage Tips

Proper storage is just as important as washing and ironing. Hang your kilt on a kilt hanger to maintain its pleats. For longer storage periods, keep it in a breathable garment bag to prevent dust and moth damage.

Travel Tip: Kilt Roll Carrier

If you’re traveling for an event, our kilt roll carrier is the perfect solution for transporting your kilt without losing its shape. It’s designed to keep your kilt neat and ready to wear when you arrive at your destination.
