The modern Fly Plaid originated from the more traditional Féileadh Mòr (Great Plaid) worn throughout the Scottish Highlands. The great plaid was a large piece of cloth which was half draped over ones shoulder, while half was pleated and belted about the waist.
The modern Fly Plaid replaced the great plaid around the 18th century when the fashion of the time dictated a shift to the modern kilt as we know it today.
Fly Plaids are traditionally worn with a formal jacket and brooch.
